All Lives Matter

In light of the recent incident at a Colorado abortion clinic, I wanted to take a few minutes to emphasize the importance of human life. I find it very ironic that the suspect actually took three lives to make a statement about saving unborn lives.

In our over complicated world and culture that we live in, somehow we have lost sight of the fact that human life is still the most valuable thing on the planet. Unfortunately a lot of conditioning has diluted human life way down the chain of valuables. I was a bit naive a long time ago, in thinking that surely no one would actually believe that money is more valuable than a human life. But I have since been proven wrong many times over.

There are those among us that truly see no value at all to the human life, and therefore it is very easy to deem it as expendable. It is easy to get numb to the loss of human life, especially when you see or hear about it happening daily. Sadly, occasionally I have thought of the senseless murders, accidents ect as routine and normal. But there is nothing normal about the loss of a valuable creation of God.

Let us not forget that we are each uniquely made and there will only be one of you and I. No duplicates, not even twins. As a priceless work of art, we have more value to God than anything else in the universe. Lately I have been making a conscience effort to see people, even those not in my immediate circle as the individuals that they are.

So I challenge you to think of people and regard them as the special person that they are and I believe the more you practice, the more you will treat people with the utmost respect. Mostly because regardless if they earn your respect or not, the God that made them has placed special value on them that is to be recognized by all.

When the next tragic headline informs you of the loss of life, pause for a moment and reflect on the person that can never be replaced. It was a once in an eternity creation and highly valued life, that had a special moment in time to be shared with us.

The Invisible Prison

It has been said that “Death and life are in the power of the tongue . .” There are countless studies that support this, however the best evidence comes from God himself as he was the first person to ever use words to produce life. The creation is the masterpiece of God’s thoughts turned into spoken words.

Every time I read the creation story in the book of Genesis I am utterly amazed that simple words were powerful enough to bring about the vastness of creation, complete with all the details, so intriguing that the great scientific minds of our time still cannot comprehend.

Because God is the one behind the thought process of spoken creation, it is no wonder that he gives sound advice and caution regarding our own thoughts, words and the impact it can have on our lives.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21

For some people it may be difficult to accept the fact that their current circumstances and direction in life is the direct result of their thoughts, feelings and actions. I for one have struggled from time to time recognizing this universal law that God has built into creation.

It was an eye opening moment after reading a book called As A Man Thinketh by James Allen. It is a classic book that goes into detail the impact of the human thought process, and how it impacts our ability to achieve.

However even though I have had the experience of reading books and the counsel of the bible on this topic, it was not until I began to put the law to practice in my own life did I experience first hand the results of my own thoughts. Let me cite a few examples:

Having been born an orphan and not knowing either of my biological parents, my life was set on a God directed course of both hardship and struggle as well as some modest victories and successes. From a very early age at an extremely abusive foster home I was indoctrinated with negative, self esteem destroying words and thoughts. Such as: “You will never amount to anything”, “You are too black, slow and no wonder your parents did not want you!” “You are going to wind up in prison.”etc I could go on and on. Those words and many other like them played over and over in my mind like a tape recording for years.

As time went on especially in high school my self confidence was lacking and fear of failure was all that consumed me. I began to think with every set back or failed test or disappointing grade that maybe my foster parents were right. I had no reason to believe otherwise.

Fortunately, after being placed into a juvenile home for several years, a few of the counselors on the campus took notice of me and began to see potential that I did not see in myself. They, unlike my foster parents began encouraging me to see what I could become and that I was not a failure and that my future could be redirected from a life of crime, drugs or incarceration.

After completing high school, and upon graduating from Marine Corps boot camp, it was at that moment that I realized that, I did not have to allow the negative thoughts of the pass to dictate my future. After all I was standing proof in my Marine Corps uniform that I had achieved what others could not. I began to believe and tell myself that I was capable of doing what I thought was impossible because of the prison of my mind. That was the beginning of major reform steps into the life I now have.

Perhaps you are struggling with your own self defeating thoughts. Let me encourage you to begin to tell yourself different things. Speak life into your mind and spirit, and you can free yourself from the invisible prison that holds so many people from a life of freedom. God says it best: “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2

Your thoughts dictate your mood and feelings and eventually your actions. I have seen this put to work in my life time and time again, mostly in the area of sin, especially before becoming a christian.

While thoughts have the power to lead to feelings and actions we do not want to do, we now also have the ability to use our thoughts to change feelings and produce actions that glorify God and bring the fruits of the spirit into our lives and those around us. It is not always easy because of the enemy we contend with daily, but we have help, in that we “can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me.” Philemon 4:13

There are times when I catch myself taking a moment to pause before speaking. I am sure the person on the other end appreciates that as well! Because I am a writer I have a tendency to want to spew out any and everything that comes across my mind as fast as possible so that I will not forget what I am saying. I would imagine the forgetting part has a lot to do with a whole lot of trips around the sun! Just saying.

However I am more than grateful for the times of reflection that allowed me to speak, grace, comfort and a kind gently word instead of the unfiltered torrent of thought that would have made another person feel unloved. Easy? Not always. Worth the effort? Most definately.

Morning Thoughts Of Jesus

IMG_1260Your life long caretaker would like to share the following:

I like watching you sleep. I will wake you up and show you a beautiful day I created just for you. You will be on my mind all day, and I hope you think of me too. I would love to chat.

Yes I know there will be some things thrown at you today you think you cannot handle, but don’t worry you can just give me your load, worries and insecurities. I have legions of angels at my command, to protect you until my father tells me to bring you home. I have peace to give you in the midst of the world’s turmoil. I have strength you know nothing about, and I will give it to you upon request and when you need it the most.

Do not worry about the material things in this life. Hey, I promise you I will make daily arrangements for you to eat and have shelter and clothing, just like I care for my animals. Your life will be a lot simpler if you trust me with that.

And yes you will lose loved ones, it breaks my heart also. Because of the disobedience of man, the earth is cursed with death. But you know what, my Father and I have a plan to fix that and restore things back to the way we intended it to be. As a matter of fact “I AM” the plan.

Believe me, trust me and allow me to manage your life, and when you die I promise to wake you up and bring you home to be with me. You will never die again, or feel hurt or sorrow, not even shed a tear. Things are different here. You will love it. I invite you to read my story in the Bible. It’s pretty cool!

I have been in a human body just like yours, and I do feel your aches and pains and I know weariness. And let me tell you just how loneliness and despair feels, as I have been there 2015 years ago. I had 12 of my best buddies and closest friends desert me in my greatest time of need. And because of that experience I promise you regardless of how bad things look, I will never desert you, or abandon you.

The bottom line is I love you and would be willing to die for you again, even if you were the only one. So you just keep putting one foot in front of the other, keep checking off things on your to do list, and know that I am aware of your chore list. I know about the screaming baby, the boyfriend, the husband who hurt you, the in-laws
and family members who do not understand you. I know about the bad economy and how the world is falling apart as my Father and I prepare for the end game. But I want you to know that we still have everything under control and we have not overlooked anything, or turned a blind eye or deaf ear to the troubles that you and the world face.

With me and my father you are on the winning team. We already know how it all ends, and we look forward to the eternal celebration with you!

Today it is just you and me against the world, and remember I have already overcome the world. It is going to be alright. Let’s walk and talk.

Sincerely,
Jesus

What is really important on our last day?
People on their death bed don’t ask for material things or money. They only want people who care and love them. Make lifetime friends while you can.

Can Your Hear God’s Voice?

Have you often wondered as I have just what exactly is “hearing God’s voice”? God in his wisdom knows that we as humans ponder that question at different times in our lives. As a matter of fact it has been at the focal point of all creation and especially when Adam and Eve were created in the Garden of Eden.

I find it very interesting that during the creation God actually spoke to his creation and commanded it and the creatures there in to do his will. NIV Genesis 1 20-25 Do you think that creation had a choice in not listening to God’s voice as you and I do today?

What a unique privilege it must have been as it is today to literally hear the sound of God’s voice. He gave clear instructions and specific commands to them on exactly what he wanted and expected. Genesis 1 28-30
How can you know for sure that you’ve heard Him correctly?

Is it consistent with the Word of God? God will not communicate anything that is contrary to his word the bible. If you are in fact reading the bible and seeking his voice the Holy Spirit will bring the word of God to remembrance or direct you to it, and it will be spot on for the current situation you are facing.

Do I have genuine peace about it? The Holy Spirit is wonderful at confirming God’s word in our hearts. You can trust God’s word for any and everything in your life, regardless of the circumstances. You have the advantage of knowing that billions of other people on the planet have experienced and been challenged with the same things you are going through, and that the same word of God was the answer for them. It always has been and always will be. NKJV 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Is this consistent with God’s overall will and plan for my life? If you are expecting
God to say something that is not consistent for his plan in your life of character
development and spiritual growth and making you more like his son Jesus, then you
need to go back to the drawing board and realign your priorities, wants and desires
with his desires for your life.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work
together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his
purpose.

Yes, I will admit this is mostly easier said than done. Even I have difficulty at times holding it all together when life stresses press upon me. I recall as recent as last week that I was emotionally overwhelmed by the hurtful behavior of other people toward me. But after the emotional torrent calmed down in my soul, I was gently reminded of the behavior that I could expect from people who have not had the born again experience. I was reminded how my old behavior was in keeping with my old nature before the born again experience.

We all need reminding from time to time, and I am glad that God will bring us back to emotional balance if we are willing to listen to his gentle voice.

The Greatest Gift

Gift: Webster’s dictionary defines a gift as
1 a thing given willingly to someone without payment; a present: a Christmas gift | [ as modifier ] : a gift shop.
• an act of giving something as a present: his mother’s gift of a pen.
• informal a very easy task or unmissable opportunity: that touchdown was an absolute gift.
2 a natural ability or talent: he has a gift for comedy.

Here we are now at the largest gift giving time of the year, Christmas. Untold amounts of money will be spent buying gifts for our family, friends and loved ones. Some thought and care goes into selecting the gift based on the person who will receive the gift.

I would imagine most of us at one time or another in our lives have been pleasantly surprised by a gift from someone for no apparent reason. Meaning that the other person was clearly thinking of you in such as way to provoke them to take action and show their love for you with the kindness of a gift.

Think back a moment to the time you received a surprise gift. What did it feel like? Was there joy, deep appreciation and gratitude? Most likely. How did it make you feel about the person who gave the gift? Were you awed by their generosity, kindness and unspoken thoughtfulness toward you? Probably.

When we receive something special like that, most of us are compelled to speak of the loving kindness of the one who gave the gift. Imagine the woman who recalls the surprise tiny box with something shiny in it from her boyfriend or husband! Not long after, the phone is in her hand and she is calling her girlfriend, to tell her what a wonderful man he is! Or in the case of the modern social media types, she takes a photo of the shiny thing and uploads it to face book!

I have heard countless expressions of happiness from people who have received earthly gifts from ordinary people. The excitement cannot be easily contained and we want to share both the gift and the gift giver with others. And that is why for me at this special time of the year, I get overjoyed at telling people about the greatest gift ever given and the one who gave it.

The gift and the giver is summed up in the following familiar verse: NIV John 3:16

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only
Son, [Or his only begotten Son] that whoever believes in him
shall not perish but have eternal life.”

The gift is eternal and priceless, Jesus Christ. The giver is God. Receiving the gift, ‘whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” is in itself an eternal reward.

The entire sum total of all the gifts that has ever been given to people will not compare in value to the one solitary gift that was given to us from God. God thought of you and I, and prepared the only gift that we need for our lives. The gift is complete and flawless and all we have to do is be willing to receive it, and be ever grateful to the giver. Have you ever had the experience of making a great effort or sacrifice to get or make a special gift for someone, and upon giving it to them, they seem put off by it or even worse reject it? How did it make you feel to know that the person you cared so deeply for showed little or no gratitude and thankfulness?

So this season while you exclaim utter surprise and joy from the gifts you receive from your loved ones, do take the time to thank the giver and give praise to him for the priceless gift that he has given to all of us freely. One way we can show our gratitude is to freely open our hearts and receive the gift. Do not neglect such a great gift that has eternal value to you.

When Your Body Is At Church, But Your Spirit Is Not!

When Your Body Is At Church, But Your Spirit Is Not!

Take a look at the above heading. Can you envision a person, maybe even you occupying a church pew on a beautiful Sunday morning, with angelic voices singing some of your favorite hymns? And while everyone around you seems to be fully engaged with the service and worship, you stand there with a tense body and dread any verse or mention of lifting up holy hands in surrender to God. You hate what you are feeling on the inside and you just do not feel any notion of being spiritually alive.

Even worse, you feel a dread of hypocrisy, in that over the past several services you seemed alive to all, and you were in full participation. So what gives? What has you paralyzed in the full presence of God and the Holy Spirit?

Such was the experience that I had very recently. All around me people were tuning into and drawing close to God and becoming fully engaged with the Holy Spirit, while I felt like an outsider who had reluctantly came to church to appease the person I came with.

I was keenly aware of my situation, and that made me feel even worse. I started to question why I was feeling this way. And right on cue as if the Holy Spirit was waiting for the question, the answer quickly emerged. I could not tune in and come into the presence of God because of unconfessed sin and lack of prayer and meditation before the service.

Now you may think that is no big deal and it should not effect your ability to connect to the living God, because after all he knows everything and most certainly the condition of your heart. While that is true, sin always has been and always will be a hinderance to the presence of a Holy God. Especially if there are things that you KNOW you have done wrong and have not talked to God about it.

The conscious that you and I have inside of us becomes very active when the Holy Spirit is close at hand, like in a service when we are surrounded by other worshiping believers! I would imagine that some of you have experienced this very thing. Trust me when I tell you that you are not alone. Of course everyone will not be shouting from the roof top of just how miserable they were in service on Sunday morning because of the sins of Saturday night!

In that regard we are all very much alike. It could be human nature to not want to be open and totally honest about our secret lives we live outside of church doors. And for christians, we have the extra scrutiny of those who know us best like our family and friends, but more importantly the ever watchful eyes of God and the Holy Spirit.

So there will be times when we are faced with this dilemma and must find a way to get back to normal so that our conscious can experience a holy God once again, guilt free. God was keenly aware of this situation when he said that if you have something that is not right with your brother, that you should leave your gift at the alter and go make things right with the person you have wronged.

That awful dreadful feeling of being disconnected while at the place of worship is not something I want to experience again. It will take some effort and focus to renew my spiritual vitality, but it will be worth it.

Perhaps you are in need of a spiritual awakening, and if so, do some soul searching to see if there is something that is hindering you from experiencing the presence of God. If it is sin, do confess and remember that God is faithful to forgive. Pray, for prayer brings us to the throne of grace and mercy. Give thanks and rejoice knowing that God wants you to draw near to him for the love and comfort that only he can give.

For he most certainly wants us to “come and reason together”.

Random Thoughts Of Me

When I am out on the road with the chance to do a lot of thinking on my life, love, God, ect. I come up with memorable thoughts that reflect the very core of who I am. I sometimes save them in my phone. This is some of them, from about ten years ago. I am sure I will add a lot more as time goes on.

Give me a woman who wants untamed love more than her Lexus, and I will give to her a blue collar man with untamed passion, uncontrollable laughter and a lifetime of love and devotion.

Amazing that we trust our possessions and money to be managed by flawed human beings. Yet we are reluctant to trust our lives to the only perfect being ever to exist.

A person or nation without moral restraint will inherit unintended consequences.

Put me in a black box in the middle of the desert, and I will find a way to be happy.
If should die today, I will have lived more than a man who is 90.

While most people are obtaining life insurance, I would rather obtain death insurance in the acceptance of Jesus Christ. Death is a guaranteed event, and it is wise to prepare for it more than anything else.

If eternity is too long to be wrong, would you consider God’s truth on being right?

Eternity is too long to be wrong.

What are you made of?

Death is not natural. We surrendered eternal life for sin and death. We made a very bad deal and unwise choice.

Bottom line, God wins, he’s right, we were wrong. (This refers to the end of the age.)

When you find a job that you truly love, you will never go to work another day in your life.

God’s wisdom is better than our education. He uses the foolish things to dumfound the wise.

I am just as excited about driving, as the day I first turned the key. (refers to my driving career)

I love all the things that money can’t buy. (I will share these with you perhaps later)
Sin is a global disease with a 100 percent fatality rate.

120 years from this moment, all 7.5 billion of us will be in eternity. Where will you be?

The unseen world is amazing, when you see it! However God says blessed are those who believe even though they have not seen.

The Formula For Change

IMG_0999Please consider the following saying from long ago: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

The above statement is a direct quote from the most famous book in the world, the Bible. The person who spoke it was none other than God himself through the pen and mind of Moses who wrote the book of Chronicles. This passage is 2 Chronicles 7:14

“The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” Psalms 9:17 “The nations have sunk down in the pit which they made; In the net which they hid, their own foot is caught.” Psalms 9:15

If you are of age 20 or perhaps even younger, it may have become all too clear the state of our nation and the many problems that plague our land. These problems are large and complex and the solutions are in some aspects beyond our human capacity. But even with all the adversity this nation of ours faces, trust me when I tell you that none of this has taken God by complete surprise. He did not look down from heaven one day and say, “Oh my goodness the United States is declining so rapidly into moral and economic decay. How did this happen on my watch? Or what can be done about it?”

In the above bible verse he gives us the exact antidote to the crisis this country is now facing, and it has nothing at all to do with a bailout package! The highlights are simple and are still as effective today as they were when first penned in the scriptures.

Why? It is because God does not change, we however do. His moral standards have not changed, ours has. So when you step back and take a look around at the slow steady downward moral trends that we have allowed for many years in this country, it could be that God is right and perhaps we are wrong. Just maybe there are consequences for the moral degradation of our society. OK, fine we accept that. Now how do we fix it?

Again I defer to the scripture referenced.

“If my people . . .” We the human race belong to him. “Who are called by my name . . .” Most of Americans consider themselves Christians. “Will humble themselves and pray and seek my face. . .” I do not know about you but I truly have failed in this area of my own personal life. Has prayer and seeking God diligently been a priority for you?

“Turn from their wicked ways,” This is where the rubber meets the road. Turning from sin requires acting against our sinful human nature. To do this successfully requires a new nature from the inside out; we call it being “born again” with a new mindset. “I will hear from heaven and forgive their sin and will HEAL THEIR land.”

Would you agree that the healing of the United States is what is needed at this critical hour? God is able to give our leaders and the president the wisdom to lead and direct our country, but it first starts with our country and the people in it, to comply in humble obedience to the above scripture. This can only be done one person at a time. I say let it begin with me, how about you? Even if the whole country is not changed, your life and circumstances will be.

I think it is time to recognize the individual call to duty and responsibility that God and our president has outlined. This is just me doing my small part in the fulfilling of that effort.

Now I know that things of God are highly unpopular in this country. I also recognized that we have declared ourselves to be wiser, liberated and would rather advocate constitutional rights over being morally right.

That being said however, I wonder if we as a society could step back for a moment, and see the impact our social decisions have had upon us. Are we too arrogant to think that just maybe, just maybe, we could use a little wisdom for the large complex problems that face us? What if God has some better answers and solutions? What if he is right and we are wrong? What if the better economy, and social trends we desire, are intertwined and intimately connected with his moral laws and individual responsibility to comply with those laws?

Furthermore, do we as a people want to have things both ways? Here is what I mean. We say we want total freedom and an anything goes society. OK, so if we get a anything goes type of society and culture, and start seeing unintended consequences that are not so pleasant, shouldn’t we accept those also?

My personal opinion is that, God is in fact very fair in giving us exactly what we asked for. Here are a few examples of what I mean.

We asked for unrestricted abortions, as a right. OK we got it. We asked for the right to live vastly alternative lifestyles, such as gay and lesbian and same sex marriage. OK we got that.

We asked that pornography have very little restrictions, and we asked that there be zero tolerance for censorship of any kind, via our major media etc. OK we got that.

We decided that we should set up our own justice system based on our own sense of fairness and punishments vs. righteousness. OK we got that.

I find it rather interesting that we live in a wonderful country with so much potential, and still we make decisions that hamper our ability to live to full capacity.

Do you find it rather odd that the brightest minds in the world seem powerless to come up with the ideas and solutions to these complex problems and still are not willing to perhaps consider a source of wisdom where these problems have been addressed?

Consider this, and tell me if this is fair or not. A source of wisdom i.e., God who has the ability to see the end result of our decisions both personally and nationally, has revealed before the fact what the outcome will be of our decisions.

Now it seems to me if the results have already been fully disclosed, that once I make the decision and start seeing those results, I cannot then complain about the results of what I asked for and actively sought.

Here is a real world example. Unprotected sex. If I have sex with a woman without using any form of birth control, and she becomes pregnant, I cannot complain nine months later about a baby being added to my household. I mean, I chose the action, and that also means I chose the consequences or guaranteed results. So it is with our country and culture.

I find it rather amazing that we seem perplexed over our big problems, instead of looking at the alternative solutions. Funny how we would counsel our kids to seek help from smarter and wiser adults, but we as adults seem to not seek help from a smarter and wiser, far more intelligent God.

I wonder, do we perhaps think that God lacks the wisdom and know how to run a government, a justice system, or a social program? Do you think he just might know something about how to fix the environment, that was part of his original creation in the first place?

So while we flounder and struggle with the complex things that plague us, I think we like a five year old who is having a fit, will not live up to our potential in this society and culture until we perhaps at least consider that there is someone who has some better answers and solutions. If we just at least recognize that, we are one step closer to solutions.

And for the record, yes I am a Christian and spiritual person, and no, I am not an extremist. But think about this, it has been said before. “If we keep doing what we have been doing, then we are going to keep getting what we are getting.” In that sense God is truly fair, because we have asked him not to intervene or interfere with our chosen way of life. And to that he says, “OK, have it your way!”

So as the years pass by and we do not see different results or outcomes, regarding people, crime, divorce, homosexuality, politicians, corruption, greed ect. When do we say that something we are doing is not working? Better still, when do we start asking for other solutions from someone who has better insight into what is going on in our world and our culture?

Will we let our pride and arrogance continue to keep us getting the same results we are now getting? What about for our personal lives? Are you and I willing to seek help and get better solutions to the problems we face from God? Or will we continue to say “I got this”. In the voice of Dr. Phil “So, how is that working out for you”?

God will BLESS, when we CONFESS!

Coming Back To The Beginning

Perhaps you have heard the saying, ‘what goes around, comes around’. While it has it roots in being a metaphor, it also is an accurate description of the law of physics. A circle is a 360 degree line that has a continuous curve, that when traced or followed will originate back to the starting point.

In the world we live in and the fast paced lifestyles that flourish all around us, it is sometimes hard to imagine that there was in fact a beginning. And yet the evidence is clear, that our very existence, and the entire creation had a starting point.

We all have come to expect a beginning of any endeavor we undertake, whether a new school, a new job, a new baby, or new spouse. And so it is with our spiritual lives and the Christian calling.

Do you remember your beginning? Would you be surprised if I told you that if you have said yes to the calling of God, that your beginning was way before the foundation of the world?

Ephesians 1: 3,4

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love . .”

Mind boggling, isn’t it! That my friend is the kind of God we are associated with. The kind that can and has predestined you and I to the glorious love and life in Jesus Christ.

If we have been Christians for many years, then we may be all too familiar with the guiding principles and doctrines of the faith. As a matter of fact we may be so comfortable in knowing what we know, that over the years some of the finer points may have faded from memory, or even worse, faded from practical application in our lives.

And it is the slow but subtle erosion of basic principles and doctrines that can easily get us off track and on a path that we no longer recognize. I have experienced this in my own life, and was so surprised to see just how far off the narrow path I had wandered.

It is the same exact challenge that we all face on a daily basis, and let us not forget that our enemy and adversary, the devil, has used this tactic on Christians and humans in general since the beginning, even in the Garden of Eden.

If and when he can get believers to doubt, question or speculate about what God says, then we are vulnerable to the constant drip of false doctrine, or man made doctrine, which currently saturates this world.

So what are we to do when we find ourselves drifting in a sea of uncertainty, regarding what we believe the christian life is all about? As referenced in the heading, we need to come back to the beginning.

I recall when I first became a christian, that even though I knew nothing about the many doctrines and spiritual understanding, I did know that if God said it, I believe it, end of story! It did not take me too long to come to understand and accept that the God of the universe had spoken, and BAM! everything in creation came to be.

So, if it was spoken in his word the Bible, I believed it, case closed. With time, I learned that the Holy Spirit would assist me in discernment and understanding of God’s word. The thing for me however, that if there were times when I was confused about what I believed, I would simply go back to the beginning, and to the source of all knowledge pertaining to the Christian faith. The Bible.

I have come to know that it is good thing to be reminded of the very basics all over again, and renew the foundation that I started on.

With the new year upon us, perhaps this is a good time to get back to a spiritual renewal, back to the beginning. Maybe this would be the ideal time to take a look at our personal lives and bring the focus of God’s word to the forefront.

Just imagine what an amazing journey this year can be, if we just simple keep our focus on the basics of our faith!

The Impossible Changed Hopeless To Hopeful!

The most recent holiday of Easter is a few days behind us now. All the left overs from the Sunday brunch is gone, along with the all of the hard boiled eggs that were found by children in the neighborhood easter egg hunt. Chocolate bunnies and jellybeans were eaten by children of all ages everywhere. I hope the spirit and meaning of Easter did not pass just as quickly, and that is the purpose of this blog.

A world changing even took place in just outside of Jerusalem over 2015 years ago. The biblical overview and the detailed accounts of Easter is by far the most fascinating story ever told to mankind. It is a story of reconciliation between guilt and punishment, mercy and grace, and the redeeming power of God that brings hope to every human on the planet who will freely receive it.

There are current events going on right now in our country that highlights the contrast between redeeming love and power of God and the futile judgement of man based on our own emotions and attitudes about justice.
The Boston Marathon bombing trial is complete and the jury is now considering the punishment to be handed down, either life in prison or execution. I have read and heard countless commentaries from various news organizations and talk radio shows debating the fate of the bomber. Overwhelming majority, especially in the New England area feel he should be put to death.

It is not my intent to debate the sentence or justification for or against it. I just want to show the contrast of mercy and justice as we know it, and mercy and justice as God knows it. I realize that not everyone will share or agree with my opinion, I only ask that you listen with an open mind.
I have heard a lot of people call into these shows asking for the death of the Boston bomber, and some of it is most certainly emotionally based, because some people have difficult removing their emotions from the situation. That is part of our human nature, as we are emotional beings.

Consider this point: As humans we are only capable of killing a body, we can do no more, and we esteem that as the highest degree of punishment that can be given. I for one do believe that justice should be rendered, I for one just do not believe that we as humans are qualified to render that justice or judgement in taking a life.
I heard a few christians call in on these radio shows, citing “Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth” and “Live by the sword, die by the sword”, as a means to justify the death penalty. I find it very interesting that as New Testament christians that those verses were the only sources cited regarding justice in this case.

What is it that drives our emotional based rational for harsh punishment such as the death penalty? Could it be because we judge according to our own standards and not God’s? Do we not measure man against man? Are not the standards of God nothing short of Holiness? How do we measure up to those standards?

There are countless times in the Bible where Jesus cites mercy, grace and truth, as opposed to vengeance, wrath and judgement. I find this to be interesting because he was the only one qualified to administer judgement, wrath and vengeance. And yet on many occasions he chose to demonstrate unfathomable grace love and mercy. The climatic drama of Easter is the exact expression of that love. Love and grace and mercy for you and I who are and will always be, underserving.

I like the part of Easter that ends with endless and eternal hope for even the worst among us. Like it or not that is the exact reason that Jesus Christ came here to this earth. To redeem and yes save those who we would be quick to destroy. He proved that he has saving power to redeem anybody who puts their trust in him, repents and believes he is who he says he is, and can do what he says he can do.

The climatic event of that first Easter, puts all of our lives and our eternal destiny in the balance based on what took place. The facts are in that Jesus Christ died, was buried and did the impossible on the third day. He rose from the grave under his own power!

You and I are now faced with the decision of what his resurrection means. He staked his entire existence and mission on the one event that would prove he was exactly who he said he was, The Son of God. If he did not come out of the grave, then he was just a mortal man like the billions who came before him and the billions who would be born after him. And you and I would be the most miserable of all people because we would be believing in someone who could not do for himself what he promised he will do for us, raise us from the dead.

It had never been done before, that a person could die and then at will and by their own command come back to life again. Yet this Jesus said he could, and told people, that he would, before it happened. He made the boldest claim one could ever make, by saying that he was the Son of God, and the proof would be reserved for the last and biggest miracle he had ever performed. As a matter of fact he was so confident, it was as if he had done this hundreds of times before.

One thing about history that I know, my belief or lack of belief of historical events do not change the event. My belief may change but the event is forever etched in the pages of eternity. Jesus Christ rose from death back to life and is now presently alive forevermore.
Because he did the impossible, you and I can now live with hope of endless possibilities. There is hope for all of us, from the worst who walk among us, even their life is redeemable. Because the judge of the universe made it so, by saying “who so ever will call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved.”

The Sun Still Shines Above The Clouds

IMG_1263Have you ever experienced a wet rainy day that seemed to go on forever? You know the kind, that even after driving for perhaps a couple hundred miles all you see is a large vast of gray clouds overhead and the constant torrent of rain.

While we all know that rain is very much needed for crops and plants and the well being of the planet, for the most part we do not like experiencing it when it inconveniences our best laid plans for outdoor activities.

Sometimes our personal lives go through periods of overwhelming gray and darkness and it seems as though the relentless rain of difficult times keeps pouring down on us. Yes, it is true that those times are real and sometimes painful and highly discouraging. I have experienced it on many occasions and it does not at all feel good.

However, I for one have discovered something that gives me much hope even in the middle of darkness and despair. I have discovered that the sun still shines above the clouds! I had the pleasure of taking a flight to Jamaica about two years ago nearing the end of a long cold New England winter in Boston. I remember getting to the airport with a large coat, bundled up and it was very cold with the wind blowing and a bit of freezing rain. I was looking forward to getting to Jamaica and experiencing the 82 degrees that was forecasted that week.

When the plane thundered down the runway, there was nothing that had changed outside my window. The rain was still coming down, it was still cold and windy, and the gray sky was as far as the eye could see. Up we went, and minutes later the entire plane was engulfed in clouds so that there was no visibility from my window. And to the unknowing, it would seem as though that the entire flight would be like that. Just a bleak gray of space that would never see the light of day. But then something amazing happened. We were flying faster and higher, and with each foot of elevation we were closer to the sun and farther from the earth.

That is important to know, because that is where the miracle begins to take shape. It is in the very knowledge that regardless of what things look like outside of my window, I knew that sooner or later we would be above the clouds and nothing but brilliant sunlight would flood the vastness of the heavens.

It is the same knowledge of hope and knowing that in our daily lives the sun is always shining regardless of what we can physically see or experience. In the spiritual sense, the Son is always shining his love toward us even if we have difficulty feeling it. The knowledge that He is always there, always present should propel us to get above the current cloud of circumstances we are in and experience the love of God shining in our lives.

I often use the thought of his eternal power and knowledge to get me through difficult circumstances. When I am having a really difficult day or week, I think on the thought that he already knows the outcome of the day and week. He knows just how things are going to turn out, and all I have to do is walk toward the end result that he can clearly see all of the time.

Have you ever felt discouraged as a Christian believer? Does it seem that no significant change is happening in your life? Well, take heart in knowing that the God of the universe, sees your life as the end product of his work. Please take comfort in this: “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;” Phil 1:6

Soldier on my friend and remember that things are not what they seem, actually they are better! You can rest in the guarantee that just as the sun does shine above the clouds of rain, that our God still shines his love toward us as we move closer to the Son and farther from this earth!

Joy To The World

1420705677333The New Kingdom Will Inspire Joy To The World
by
Eugene Coghill

This letter goes out to close friends and strangers who I shall meet, who will become friends.

I wanted to take the time this holiday season to share a few things from the heart about renewed hope that this season brings. We live in a stressful world and it can be difficult at times to see the joy in faces of people around you. While I was doing some shopping I made a point to step back and reflect on what this season is all about, and wondered why that the most joyous time of the year brings about the most stress in our lives. I saw people with faces that did not reflect hope in this world’s future. As the world gets further and further removed from the real meaning of Christmas, I wanted to take the time to remind us exactly what the hope and joy is all about.

While driving into Boston this morning I heard some inspirational Christmas carols and found my self singing out loud. One of my favorites is called Joy To The World. The title is in stark contrast with the news headlines in the paper or on television. However, Joy To The World, is the future headline of news in the new Kingdom that will be established here on earth. The song reflects the hope of the renewed creation, and peace that will be earth wide and the renewed brotherhood of mankind. Joy to the world, reflects all of our current global problems solved by a much better government, and ran by the King who was born over 2014 years ago, Jesus Christ.

Joy to the world reflects a time, when sickness, sadness, death and sin will be no more. Joy to the world, will mean we no longer deploy troops to distant lands to engage in war. We won’t learn how to conduct war. Joy to the world, will mean enough food for everyone, and no longer will our TV screens show the faces of hungry children, and our homeless shelters will be a thing of the past. Joy to the world, will reflect people from every nation, race, color and creed will come together under the banner of one God.

Joy to the world, will reflect paradise renewed, that was lost by Adam and Eve. Our life will not be zapped of energy, old age or death. Joy to the world, when our children will play safe and secure, and their laughter can be heard all over the neighborhood. Parents will no longer fear, abductions, molestations, handguns and drugs will be far removed from our youth. Joy to the world, will mean a time when truth is welcomed by all, and corruption greed and politics will not compete for our attention.

I am speaking of a time that is hard to imagine, because what we see is all that we have ever known. However there is hope, because as most of you know; that little baby that was born in Bethlehem, over 2000 years ago, has been appointed the reigning king over this earth to rule God’s Kingdom right here on planet earth. His government can do what our governments cannot. It will solve issues that are impossible for us humans to solve. His government can administer justice righteously, and money or the color of your skin will not be important. I am speaking of a future time, but there is something that we can do right now while waiting for it.

For those of us who are Christians, we can demonstrate to others what life will be like in the new Kingdom. We are called to be a role model to the rest of the world, beginning with our family and friends who know us best, even with all of our faults and mistakes. Parents are called to be a role model to children. Husbands are called to be a role model to your wife and show unconditional love just as Jesus does for us. It does not take much to bring a little bit of heaven down to earth. Small simple gestures such as holding the door for someone else, a kind word to a stranger, a helping hand to a friend in need or some time spent with the ones you love and those who are alone and lonely. How about a phone call to show you care, or a random act of kindness. And may you always be reminded that the joy and smiles that you bring to others will be reflected back to you.

So this season as you busy yourself with all you have to do, take the time to remember that the greatest gift you have to give to others is not found in a store, in the mall, or online. The greatest gift you have to give to those around you is found inside of you. It is the gift of yourself and love for others that you can share daily, and it does not cost you anything except your willingness to love others.
So while we all are waiting for God’s Kingdom, whether we are alive or sleeping in our graves, in the meantime we can bring a little bit of God’s Kingdom to those around us by our lifestyle. I will leave you with this, try your best to treat your family and friends as if they were your next door neighbors in the Kingdom, and treat them as you would yourself. I am wishing all of you a joyous holiday season. And may God’s love fill your heart so that you may share it with others. Let it begin with me. Your life can become a whole new adventure and then you too will proclaim: Joy To The World!
